Project CHK
The College of Human Kinetics is home to the best and brightest athletes of the University of the Philippines. It is the place where they learn the basic fundamentals and build a good foundation for a better understanding of the science of sports.
Interestingly, upon going through the records of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), I found out that the University of the Philippines (UP) is the only public school member among the 8 member universities. As such, the financial support given to the University’s athletic program is not as big compared to its private school counterparts. Be that as it may, it has still managed to become the overall champion in several sports such as Men’s Swimming, Men’s and Women’s Judo, Women’s Softball and in the Cheer Dance Competition (which is an exhibition).
Looking at how hard these athletes train and practice, I am amazed at how they are able to find the time to study and still excel in their academics. It is no joke to train at 5 or 6 in the morning then rush to class by 8am and have afternoon training sessions again by 5pm. The academic workload for these athletes is no different from that of other students. There are no exceptions given and they are expected to perform just like everyone else.
Upon visiting the College and going around with my friend Lester, I chanced upon the varsity locker room. Much to my surprise and dismay, I saw how poorly maintained the facilities were. The cubicles had no curtains, the showers had no shower heads, the toilet had no seat nor a working water closet. Even the sink had no faucet! The Varsity Locker Room looked more like a public restroom that had not been cleaned in years. It was really awful.
And so, I decided to help out with Lester’s [PROJECT CHK: Varsity Locker Room Renovation] I set out to look for people who are kind enough to help renovate the College’s Facilities. I also offered to host the project’s website here. So for those of you who are interested, please get in touch with me or visit PROJECT CHK for more details.
