REHAB DOCTORS AT THE HELM OF RUN FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

.

Rehab doctors championing the needy persons with disabilities, one of society’s most neglected sector, are at the helm of “M.O.V.E. Manila Run 09” this July 19, 2009, 5:00 A.M. at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. “M.O.V.E.” stands for “Making Ourselves Vigilant to Exercise”, an advocacy for exercise awareness in the community, combined with a fundraising drive for indigent Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

.

For the first time, the doctors of the Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (PARM) are taking their benefit Run to Manila. In the past two years, all their Runs had been in Cebu and Bacolod, with the initial “M.O.V.E. 5K Run” held December 2, 2007 in Cebu, drawing some wheelchair athletes.

.

Now, PARM projects to draw at least seventy (70) wheelchair athletes, families running with their differently-abled loved ones, and celebrities like basketball players from PBA, in “M.O.V.E. Manila Run ’09”, the culmination of the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

.

In 2010 and beyond, PARM targets to continue this advocacy by having Runs in other key cities of the country like Baguio, Iloilo and Davao.

.

For the past three and a half decades, physiatrists – medical doctors specializing in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, have organized themselves under PARM to promote excellence in rehabilitation care. The academy has almost 300 members, covering all areas of the country. It has accomplished programs for the welfare of the PWDs, through its various advocacies and linkages, locally and internationally.

.

Recently, PARM spearheaded initiatives such as the creation of a PARM-PMA Charity Rehab Center, the Cerebral Palsy Week, Wheelchair and Prosthesis Distribution, Free Clinics and Lay Fora for Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Awareness.

.

In general, disability may be classified as physical, mental or emotional, which may be caused by either traumatic or non-traumatic causes. An estimated 10% of total population of the Philippines, eight million Filipinos, have some form of disability. The National Council for Disability Affairs is the government body which is the focal point of national policies for various disability issues. Although there are approximately 500 non-government organizations including organized PWD groups which offer different services and resources for specific needs, there are still a lot of PWDs whose needs are not met adequately.

.

Through the PARM F.U.N.D. (Fund for the Upliftment of the Needy Disabled) which M.O.V.E. Runs support, members provide for the rehabilitation and wellness needs of indigent Filipinos. So far, the F.U.N.D. has sponsored a portion of the medical expenses of eight (8) PWDs in the Visayas. They target to raise at least three hundred thousand pesos for the PARM F.U.N.D. through the M.O.V.E. Manila Run this July 19.

.

Anyone can sponsor and participate in “M.O.V.E. Manila Run 09” under 3 events – the 2.2 kilometer fun run-walk (with a P250 registration fee) to the 5 kilometer (P300) and the 10 kilometer (P350) runs for 3 categories – men, women and wheelchair athletes. Those who do not plan to run-walk but wish to support this worthwhile cause, may pledge to sponsor registration fees of participating wheelchair athletes.

.

(For registration and sponsorship, interested parties can contact Thumbie 09156872380, Dr. Renald 09173209198 or Dr. Melissa 09194138852, or the PARM Secretariat (Lei/Jane) 4159048 )
