Official time of 00:57:42… BAD! I mean I was able to do 55:13.18 for my last 10k at Bonifacio for Men’s Health. I was off for 2 mins and 29 secs… In that time I could have already done 400m or 500m…
I’m very much disappointed with my performance today. In fact, my friend Sander, who just started training with me the past 2-3 weeks beat me by 2 mins with a time of 56 flat. I’ve been training since April and I was beaten… well, not that I’m competing, but I’m just saying I did poorly.
There are several factors though that could have contributed to my poor performance.
1) I did not have enough sleep. I was already in bed by 12mn but I eventally dozed off at around 2:30. I was tossing and turning in bed. I woke up at 4:15 am… barely 1hr and 45 mins worth. Though I was not tired, my body felt so heavy.
2) There were a lot of hills, but it still did not explain my performance since I even did better at Rush to Infinity with a time of 00:56:58. Though it was only seconds faster, I’m sure there were steeper hills there.
3) It was hot. Though Rush to Infinity could have been just as hot, it still could have affected my run.
4) Lack of training for the past week. I missed two easy 10k runs (Tuesday and Thursday) and one track session (Friday). In fact, my last run was last Wednesday when I did bleachers and stairs and 10×100m.
My leg hurt last Tuesday and Thursday, particularly the lower part. It was either my soleus muscle or my achilles tendon. Hopefully, it’s not the tendon or I would really be upset. I could someone feel it acting up earlier but my resolve to push myself was stronger.
5) I’ve had a bad week. Not only did I miss training, I wasn’t also in the best of moods. I mean there was something bothering me… I can’t really pinpoint but all I can say was that I wasn’t happy. It felt as if I had a rain cloud over my head keeping me down. I’d oversleep and stay in bed for more than 10 hours. I’d have to drag myself out of bed just to go to school. In fact, I wasn’t able to train at ULTRA in the morning but instead opted for late afternoon / evening sessions. I was late for my classes, attending only 30 mins of a 1 hour class and skipped two also this week, one of which I was called for recitation
Last week wasn’t really good for me.
* * *
Anyway, tomorrow is the start of another week. Hopefully, I get to start it right. I’ll be training at ULTRA in the morning and I’ll also make sure I get to do my afternoon easy runs. My next run will be the Makiling Challenge in UP Los Baños. I’ll train properly for that.
Also, no more cheating. I’ve been getting my 100km incentives ahead of time… by buying shorts, socks and weights. NO MORE. Moratorium on personal items until I reach 700km. So I’m skipping the 600km incentive since I already had an advance. Either way, it’s just two and a half weeks since I get to do at least 40k in a week (3 10k runs, 2 5k runs or training at ULTRA).
NO MORE BEING DOWN. It really got to me.
OH, pictures to follow

With all my ranting, I forgot to mention the people I saw today.
It was great seeing all of you! Patrick Concepcion, Jaymie, members of Happy Feet: Aljo, Mayen, Gigi, Doknoy, Mon, Vima, Tin Tin and of course, other bloggers, PrometheusCometh, DATC, our photographers, Ben and RC, our sponsors Vince of Rush, other people at ULTRA, Lala, Coach John Lozada, Coach Jo-Ar, CatA, and several people I forgot to mention or whose names escape me… I’m sorry, I wasn’t able to get the name of the person who asked me if I was the Passion Runner, aka the person who used to be “bigger”… Thank you for the compliment, I take it as a compliment, as I know it means I now look healthies, fitter… in other words, better. Haha! Also saw Nana Mayen and Javi.

Hey Eric,
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Truth be told, you made a lot of improvement since the start of the year. Every course is different so I don’t think you could really compare the Human Race with Miracle Run. In fact, the 10K of Rush to Infinity is also different from the race course today (i.e. the McKinley Hill loop was only for the 15K runners at Mizuno while the 10K didn’t go through McKinley). I don’t know about the veteran runners but the 10K Human Race IS a killer course. Imagine tackling the dreaded McKinley Hill right off the bat and it was rolling hills the rest of the way, the only respite being the run inside Heritage Park. Even then, there was still this slight incline before you exit the park. Bottom line, you raced a good one Eric. See you at ULTRA.

Hi Levy! Really? It was a killer course? Me, I loved the hills… I enjoy my bleacher and stair workouts at ULTRA so I do well on hills. I dunno if I get faster or everyone else just gets slower.
What bothers me is that my friend beat me by 2mins. haha! Well, he’s 6 years younger, so that may be a factor…but still. I was looking at my training calendar. I had 7 missed training/runs… So that’s a total penalty of P3,500. I was only able to sustain my training schedule for a week.
Nawalan ako bigla ng gana…Well, let’s see if I do better next race. Makiling Challenge, Here I come!

Eric, just as Levy said, dont be hard on yourself at all. Also just check the distance butmy nike and my garmin gives the course almost a kilometer further. That might also be a factor as my time was also a bit slower and then again hills are the best partners to get you close to death that is and today they were partners. Rest well and as you said, start the week with a positive and get the most out of it. KEEP FIT

Hey Philip!
That makes me feel a lot better… knowing that I ran 11k instead of 10
What did your Garmin say?
Aug 31st, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Eric, I agree with Levy and Philip! Runs and races are peaks and valleys. All runners will tell you that. There were a number of positives from you today. Take the positives into tomorrow’s workout!
Did I read correctly that Coach Rio’s next race directed run is November 9th? If so, I’ll be there to participate. When you guys get more details. please let me know. Thanks again.

eric,
since you are a beginner (less than one year of running), first, you must build up your endurance to strengthen your heart, lungs, and legs..and of course, the intangible–positive attitude! you can not do endurance and speed at the same time! or else you will be prone to injury. just remember the principles of training in running—consistency & patience. your time in the nike race will challenge you to go back to be consistent in your running schedules and i am sure you will improve on the next race. good luck!

Passion Runner, my garmin had it just over 10.5km and I calibrated my nike ipod with the sensor Friday and that was almost 11km. It makes me feel better to on my time though.

Hi Wayne! Yes, Coach is handling Nov. 9 race but he will also have one in October which is to be announced. There will also be RUNRIO races in December, January and February.
Bald Runner, my experience in NIKE human race will definitely push me to train harder, stronger, longer. Well the route is indeed different. But so far, in all the routes that I’ve tried, the 2nd and 3rd time is always faster than the first. I’ll be looking forward to the next race using the same route. It was also my first time inside McKinley Hill and The Heritage Park since I only ran 10k in Mizuno I and II.
Philip, thanks. The .5km would indeed account for the 2mins. I guess I shouldn’t be too worked up about my time…
I hope Sander is not reading this. Haha!
I also can’t believe that he beat me by two minutes. I guess it just wasn’t my race.

I don’t think I spoke with anyone who said that today’s race course was easy. In fact most people were off their PR’s. As for your friend perhaps he has some Kenyan or Ethiopian lineage?

Like a popular ad for running shoes. There are good days and there are bad days. Im also struggling with the fact that I have been running 10Ks for more than two years but still stuck at 58-65mins. What I would tell myself is that others are not even as lucky to reach sub-60. But each races has something to learn, Most of all, inspires us all to keep on running.

Jay, well I guess I’m overreacting… I did enjoy the route though. I loved the hills. They were hard but it made me go faster, both going up and down.
Jinoe, that’s true… there is something to learn from every race. It also motivates us to do better the next time.
PR… Personal Record, and not professional record. I should be enjoying the run and not too fixated on my time or comparing it to the time of others.
It’s TIME FOR ME TO MOVE ON… Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement.

Wow, you’re a fast and consistent runner. I hope to reach the same level as you are when it comes to running.
Anyways, it was my first 10K run and it was a blast! I really had fun during the Nike Human Race event (even though I ended up buying a lost of Nike stuff to join it), LOL!! Thanks for the organizers

hey, you might be overtraining yourself… you need to have relax days/weeks also. Give your body time to recover after hard workouts so you’ll reap all its benefits! Congratulations on the run
Sep 2nd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Hi eric,
Don’t be too hard on yourself. There will be another race to run. My wife and I greeted you before the race. God bless!
Sep 2nd, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Spikeithard, I saw your site. Nice
Congrats on your 10k. That’s where the running addiction starts… hehe… after your first, you’ll just keep on going and going and going… just like the energizer bunny
Genie, Nikeplus was extremely slow last Aug 31 due to the simultaneous runs all over the world, both physical and virtual races. That’s the right attitude. A run is always good, whether easy or hard.
congrats on conquering the hills!
Joe, you’re right. My brother also told me to rest myself and properly recover. Well, according to Coach Rio, unloading week this week.
Bro J,
It was nice seeing you at the race
Looking forward to the next
