Endurance vs. Speed
It’s been 5 days since my last post and 3 days since my last run. I’ve had too much to do and yet at the same time, too much “rest” from training. After doing another PR at Men’s Health (post to follow) with an unofficial time of 55:13.18, I allowed my legs to rest for 2 days.
Today, as much as I wanted to wake up early and run, I ended up doing my speed work at Ateneo 1) due to the rains and 2) it was already late. Classes were subsequently suspended by 12nn so I only went out today to run.
ENDURANCE vs. SPEED
Last Thursday, I was talking to Coach John (Asst. Coach of the UP Track n’ Field Varsity, Philippine Record Holder for 800m) that I got to do my 200s (4sets of 4×200m) at a faster speed but my recovery time was slower by 30-60secs. [See previous post] When I told Coach Rio about it, he said that “kung yon ang ginawa mo, nag-focus ka sa speed… focus ng training pa rin natin ngayon endurance.”
It made sense. Although I was faster by 5 secs doing my 200s in an average of 37 secs with 40 secs being my slowest in every set, I had indeed gotten faster but my recovery time was too long. In training, they say that you have to first build up your base before proceeding to speed and power.
Coach Rio says that it’s ok if I’m slow now since I’m still doing my base training. We’ll be focusing on speed when my body is ready for it. So today, I kept that in mind. I was supposed to do stairs but due to the rain, it was dangerous. My workout today consisted of 4 sets of 200-400-200, with 200m slow jog for recovery and 400m slow jog in between sets.
Here are my times below.

I still have a lot of backlog in my posts. I’ve yet to post pics of the Nike Lunar Trainer product testing, as well as the Men’s Health Miracle Run.

Eric, in advance, congratulations on the 10K PR.
When I see your workouts, I need to get back on the track at least once a week. As it is right now, I’m doing fartlek with a hard mile near the end of my workout.
Anyway, hope everything’s well. Take care.

Hi Wayne! Sorry for the late response. Been awfully busy. Thanks! I really worked to reach a new PR. I’m looking forward to meeting you in November!
By the way, there’s something I want to run by you
I’d like to get some feedback. I’ll send you an email.
